What is a research study?
A research study is designed to answer specific scientific questions. At the Ocular Surface Lab, we explore topics like improving contact lens comfort, treating and diagnosing dry eye disease. The tests we use are similar to those in a regular eye exam at your optometrist’s office.
Most studies involve multiple visits to our clinic, but some may only require one. We’ll provide full details at the start, including the study schedule, procedures, any risks, and compensation, so you can decide if you want to participate.
What information will I receive prior to the study?
You will receive a Participant Information Sheet (PIS) outlining all aspects of the study. At your first appointment, you’ll have time to read the document before deciding whether to participate. A member of the study team will be available to answer any questions and explain the study details.
The PIS includes:
- The goals of the study
- A description of study products and procedures
- Potential side effects
- Contact information for any concerns during the study
- The study appointment schedule and any specific instructions
You will also receive a copy of the document to keep.
Who has reviewed the study?
All research studies conducted at OSL have been reviewed and given ethics clearance by Auckland Health Research Ethics Committee (AHREC) or Health and Disability Ethics Committee (HDEC).
Are there any expenses that I am responsible for?
No, you will not be responsible for any costs related to the study. All study-related expenses, including products and procedures, are covered. In some studies, vouchers will be provided as reimbursement for the time spent attending research visits.
Is parking availabe?
Yes! Research participants can park in the Clinic Visitor parking, located in the underground carpark at Grafton Campus. We’ll provide detailed instructions before your visit.
